FIFA has launched an investigation and publicly condemned the racist insults directed at the American digital influencer IShowSpeed during the match between Argentina and Cape Verde, played on July 3, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, during the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., was watching the game wearing a Cape Verde national team jersey while livestreaming the match to millions of followers on social media. During the broadcast, a fan in the stands hurled racist insults at him, including a discriminatory slur and phrases such as “go home” and “go cry at the zoo,” according to videos that quickly went viral.

In light of the backlash over the incident, FIFA issued an official statement reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy against racism.

"FIFA strongly condemns racism, hatred, and discrimination in all their forms. These actions have no place in soccer, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society,” the organization stated, adding that an investigation was launched as soon as it became aware of the incident.

World soccer’s governing body also emphasized that the World Cup should represent an environment of unity among peoples and cultures.

“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity, and respect. It brings together people, cultures, and communities from around the world, and anyone who acts contrary to these values is not welcome in our game,” the organization added.

The incident occurred during Argentina’s thrilling 3–2 victory over Cape Verde in extra time, in a match marked by the Cape Verdean team’s excellent performance in its World Cup knockout stage debut. However, events off the field ended up gaining international attention.

IShowSpeed is one of the world’s most popular content creators, with over 56 million subscribers on YouTube and a massive presence on other digital platforms. During the World Cup, he has been covering several matches live, bringing millions of young soccer fans closer to the sport.

So far, FIFA has not announced any sanctions, but has assured that it will continue to investigate the case to identify those responsible and take appropriate action. The incident reignites the debate on combating racism in stadiums and the need to protect players, fans, and public figures from discriminatory behavior during major international competitions.
